E.S.L.

In North Portland, where FWM is located, there are 17 different languages spoken and the one with the highest percentage of people who speak that language is for Spanish speakers.  To address this we developed an ESL Program that offers classes to help these people speak English.  There are several reasons FWM has decided to serve families with this program and the first is:  Many parents in this situation are relying too much on their children as translators when dealing with the mainstream English speaking population. This is causing a role imbalance between parent and child.  Secondly, FWM wants to be intentionally reaching out to families that live in the margins of our community who could benefit from the other services FWM offers.

2012 ESL Class Schedule

We offered ESL classes last Summer and had a Summer of memorable experiences and new learning opportunities.

Classes ran July 9th – September 26th and were held at the St. Johns Wesleyan Church located at 8850 N. St. Louis

  • Wednesdays, we met from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.

Mid-Term Social – August 22nd, 6:30-8:30pm

FamilyWorks wants to do more than just teach English to our students. We want to build trusting relationships with each person. Relationshps that encourage and empower the role they have within their family while enriching a community of people who embrace the vision of FamilyWorks because they experienced it first hand.

The ”Mid-Term Social” is a reflection of our commintment to build meaningful relatioinships by spending time together. The event is a cooperation between the Staff and Students as they work together to plan the activities for the event. As usual FOOD plays a big role, so come hungry!!

Graduation Banquet - September 26th, 6:30-8:30pm

We held a Graduation Banquet on September 26th.  It was a fine night to celebrate the relationships and the accomplishments of the students during the Summer ESL program.
